ZMH Ltd has updated it’s understanding on the current legal position of waste oil heaters following government changes that came into force in April 2016.
The information can be read here: http://www.zmosystems.co.uk/information/
“This is our understanding of the current legal position following the changes,” said James Onions, Director ZMH Ltd. “But this is an issue of responsibility for the operator so we’d urge people to consider and investigate themselves.”
ZMH say providing any clear or definitive guidance has been difficult.
“We were originally part of a DEFRA working group when a review was announced some years ago,” continued James. “This seemed to end up going nowhere until very recently but right up until now, we’ve still had no contact of any description from DEFRA, or anyone associated with the legal changes to seek input or clarify things for us.”
ZMH say there also seemed to be confusion among local authorities too through last winter, with many continuing to issue permits with any warning to operators of imminent changes.
ZMH say much of the current information has been provided through the Independent Garage Association (IGA) and the Garage Equipment Association (GEA), with both trade bodies doing an ‘excellent job’ of investigating and clarifying the changes.
ZMH say the term ‘waste oil heaters’ is still in use on the website and some literature as it remains the prime name used by operators looking to buy new or continue to use existing heaters with non-waste fuels, though ZMH will also be using the terms ‘multi-fuel’ and ‘duel-fuel’ oil heaters more to attempt to make the descriptions more appropriate for the new UK legal environment.
